As a youth I was a huge fan of her music. What does her death have in common with Elvis Presley and Michael Jackson? They all battled the demons of substance abuse and to some degree, it contributed to their deaths. The crafted legacies by industry historians along with family and friends will give little or no attention to the substance abuse issues in their lives.

In music, film, politics, sports and even religion we want to paint successful figures in their given fields in a positive light for what they contributed. However, it is often not an accurate portrayal of their life. Edited out are their failures. Silenced.

I have been reading the Scriptures since I was a boy. One of the fascinating things I like about them is their honesty. You would think the stories in Scripture of the giants of the Christian faith like Abraham, Moses, King David, Paul and Peter would only feature their successes. God did include their incredible exploits, however, He also included their failures. Really embarrassing ones.

Where is the good news in relationship to our failures? Jesus came into our world to bring us this news. First, it means we admit our failures or sin to our self. We say “Self, I’ve got a problem”. Second, we admit to God, turning our lives towards Him seeking His help. Third, we admit to others who have been hurt by our actions. Fourth, we use our mistakes to help others avoid them. The sin of legendary King David in the Scriptures was written about at great length. He had an adulterous affair that he tried to cover up by killing his mistress’s husband. After a period of time he finally admitted what he did. He sought God’s forgiveness then said, “I will teach transgressors your ways, and sinners will return to you” (Psalm 51:13). Through our sin and failures we can teach people the consequences of bad behavior and urge them to avoid what we have done. I believe that is why God included the failures of His great workmen.

Let us stop trying to keep up appearances and explain away our actions. In our failure, may we turn to Jesus and let him take our ashes and turn them into something beautiful. May He be our hope for today.

Launching new television ministry

Great Awakenings introduces a brand new ministry, Hope for Today (HFT) with Clint Decker television. Check out the 60 second commericial: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WuUN5yQ6PH0&feature=related

In 2006, I began writing the HFT column that is currently being sent to 12 rural papers throughout Kansas. In 2011, we introduce a HFT podcast that is the audio version of my column. By this summer we ought to be nearing 1,000 episode hits. Now in 2012, we take HFT to television.

It is a 30 minute broadcast that features my preaching ministry. My focus for this program, like the column and podcast, is to provide hope in the midst of current events and the trends of our day. The basis for this hope is two-fold. First, it began years ago with my life-changing encounter with Jesus Christ that made me a new man. Secondly, it is the Holy Scriptures, the source of all truth, revealing God the Father, Jesus the Son and the Holy Spirit, which provide wisdom and insight into ourselves, our world and how to live in the midst of our journey towards eternity. Tune in and discover your hope for today!

We will produce one new program a month. They will air on local television and the internet.

HFT television is airing locally on Twin Valley Telecommunications VOD channel. Additional stations will be coming throughout 2012.

HFT television is avaible on YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dq0khNKNDNc

Subscribe to our YouTube page to watch future episodes and have access to program archives: http://www.youtube.com/user/GreatAwakeningsInc

This is a team effort beginning with God. We give thanks and praise to Him for this opportunity. I know He will bless and use this mightily. We also thank Jan Keim (Director/Producer), Josh Macy (Assistant Director/Producer), Rod Keen (Narrator), Todd Britt (Narrator), Mikhaela Craig (Graphic Design) and our board of directors.

The program is not used as a fund raising vehicle. We do not ask people to send in money. Our one purpose is to simply serve viewers with the good news of Jesus. We thank our ministry supporters who provide the finances for us to do this.

HOPE FOR TODAY: Awakening the Mysteries of Love

My wife and I got to know each other when she came and asked me to help her start up a community wide youth ministry. As we worked together, feelings for her began stirring within me. I found myself confused saying to myself, “I have these feelings for her, but what should I do?”

When we are in these situations, our human emotions, friends and the cultural influences tell us to move quickly. Ask him or her out. Then go on a second date. Then it’s the first touch of the hands. The first embrace. The first kiss. The first, “I love you. Then marriage. And all this, 0 to 60, in just a few months. Where is the budding romance? Where is the love story to retell children and grandchildren?

We want whatever we want instantly. We think because we can instantly access movies, music, our money and a host of other things, we ought to have an instant relationship with instant love and happiness. Let’s slow down! That kind of thinking leads to divorce, unplanned pregnancies, adulterous affairs, emptiness and countless broken hearts.

Listen to the wisdom of God who says, do “not stir up or awaken love until it pleases” (Song of Solomon 3:5). God is warning us not to awaken the passions of love too soon. There is divine wisdom in employing self control over our emotions, while letting the shrouded mysteries of love stir within us. Over time we allow it to mature, grow and become a blossoming beautiful flower that can be cut at its peak of beauty at just the right time.
God created us with the capacity for love. When we follow His plan there is fulfillment. How do we know when to move forward and awaken love? The Bible says, “Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him and he will make straight your paths” (Proverbs 3:5,6). Our path seems anything but straight while walking through the ups and downs of love. Fortunately, the Lord straightened my path and led me to marry Kathe. When we turn our lives to Jesus and seek Him He’ll give us the clarity and direction we need. He is the author of this crazy love and it’s no mystery to Him. May Jesus be your hope for today in love and life.

HOPE FOR TODAY: Gifts for the New Year

Have you ever eaten 12 grapes at the stroke of midnight on New Year’s Day? How about having eaten some black-eyed peas or set off fireworks? The people of the United States, Japan, Scotland, Spain and other nations have their unique traditions for bringing in the New Year which they hope will bring them good luck in the future.

The start of New Year’s celebrations date back to around 4,000 years ago, during the ancient Babylonian era. From those days to modern times there has always been a common theme among New Year’s traditions – “good-bye to the old and good luck in the new”.

The origin of the month of January embodies this. The name evolves from Janus, the Roman god of new beginnings. He had two faces; one looked back to the old and the other to the future. The Roman people would then celebrate before Janus, wishing they would receive good luck from him in the New Year.

No doubt, in all of our lives there was a mixture of good and bad in 2011. Like the Japanese do, maybe we would like to attend a “Forget-the-year” party and bid farewell to the difficult memories of last year. As you enter 2012 what are you relying on to bring a new and better year?

While researching for this column, my mind raced to a quote from the Bible I have read many times, “If anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come. All this is from God” (2 Corinthians 5:17-18). This ties in perfectly with the New Year!

The old can pass away and the new can come through gifts from the God of heaven. First, the gift of forgiveness can totally wash clean the sins of the past and bring healing to the wounds of yesterday. Secondly, the gift of eternal life can instantaneously create a new heart and mind that will breed new attitudes, desires and a future filled with an adventurous mission from God. These gifts originate from the life, death and resurrection of Jesus, God’s only Son. He gave His life that we might have new life.

Begin this New Year by turning your life to Jesus Christ. Humble yourself before God and call upon Him. Say good-bye to your old life and receive the gift God has for you in Christ. May Jesus be your hope for today and the New Year.

HOPE FOR TODAY: The Story of Christmas

Good overcomes evil. Right triumphs over wrong. Justice prevails over injustice. Most films and theater productions have that heroic climax. Writers weave it skillfully into their work and audiences love it. There must be something in the fabric of our being that longs for what is good, right and just to be victorious in our own life and world. I believe the Christmas story embodies that.

The ancient, but true, story takes place in a small Israeli town. One starlit night the world was forever changed when the face of evil met its arch enemy. The Baby Jesus. He was not just any child. A series of miraculous events surrounded His birth. Before His conception, an angelic being appeared to His mother saying, “You will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus. He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. And the Lord God will give to him the throne of his father David, and he will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and of his kingdom there will be no end” (Luke 1:31-32). There were many such messages. They continually pointed out this Child would rise one day to become a great King and Deliverer. It all seemed a bit strange, but the news brought glimmers of hope to a world imprisoned in darkness.
Was this Child a mere mortal like you and me? On the outside He looked like one of us, but on the inside He was much more. The seed of Baby Jesus was literally sent from heaven. His seed was placed in the womb of His mother, Mary, by God’s Spirit. She was a virgin having never been with a man before. It was the miracle of all miracles. This seed of Jesus was divine. He was the very image and nature of the God who ruled the universe in heaven.

What a story! God left His throne, with all its splendor, and took on the form of a common human being. He became one of us, coming to deliver us and the world from sin. He came to establish a new kingdom on earth over which one day He will rule. That day all evil, wrong and injustice will be destroyed.

The theme of the Christmas story is hope. I agree. The Arab Spring and Union uprisings are the face of many. The United States has seen hundreds of thousands protest across the country including the states of New York, Ohio and Wisconsin. Across the globe we have seen protests in countries throughout the Middle East and in Europe.

Each of these uprisings swells from a deep divide protestors have with their opponents. Differences have moved beyond discussion to all-out public opposition. The protestors feel their cause and actions are justified in order to give voice to the evil they see. Is public opposition like this the only answer to the evil and injustice we see in our world? I believe there is a better way.

Centuries ago Jesus rose up among His countrymen with great prominence. Thousands followed Him. Many had hopes He would be their national savior and overthrow the evil Roman Empire.

How did Jesus handle the pressure to use His influence to lead a rebellion? He told His followers “the Son of Man (Himself) must suffer many things and be rejected by the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and on the third day be raised” (Luke 9:22). Jesus’ intent was never to topple a government or fight against a corrupt system. When His ministry began He said, “Repent for the kingdom of heaven is at hand” (Matthew 4:17). Clearly, Jesus lived for something beyond this world. He was not given to the lure of money and power nor did He cower in fear of others. He was courageous, but His fight was against the very seed of injustice. He fought against the powers of sin, death, the devil and pride in the human heart. He did not come to take up a battle against government and religious leaders. Rather, it was to lay His life down that others might be saved from their sin and live to the glory of His Father in heaven.

Rather than rising up against people and institutions may we rise up against the power of sin in the human heart. Let us bow before God and pray for our enemies before we rise up and demonstrate before them. Let us give voice to the good news of Christ before we give voice to our grievances. May Jesus be our hope for today.

HOPE FOR TODAY: The Wrath of God

Our American culture encourages one another to accept a diverse range of beliefs and lifestyles. This tolerance in our houses of worship and on the streets of our cities has failed miserably. It has bred an unaccountable culture.

How will such a society respond to the wrath of God? There are literally hundreds of verses from the Bible that speak directly about this from both the Old and New Testaments. One passage says “whoever does not obey the Son [Jesus] shall not see life, but the wrath of God remains on him” (John 3:36).

What does the wrath of God mean? Theological scholar, Dr. Leon Morris, writes that it is the “active opposition of God’s holy nature to everything that is evil.” What is evil? It lives in the heart of all mankind and it is every thought, word or deed that violates the glory, honor and holiness of God. In simple terms the wrath of God is His anger against our sin.

No matter how we feel about something is not important, it is how God sees it. If we are engaged in behavior that violates the holiness or justice of God we ought to tremble. God is invisible, is everywhere, reads our thoughts, can control the weather, dispatches unseen forces, can alter the course of daily events and possess the power over life and death. What is the ultimate expression of the wrath of this God? Hell. Hell is the full manifestation of His wrath for an eternity. Truly, “It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God” (Hebrews 10:31).

What shall we do? One thing - call out for the mercy of God. What can save us from God’s wrath? Jesus. Have you ever heard of the term “Jesus saves”? What does He save from? A follower of Jesus once wrote, that we “shall be saved by him from the wrath of God” (Romans 5:9). When we admit our sin then desperately appeal to the mercy God in Christ then we can be covered and ultimately saved from God’s wrath.

Individually and as a country may we flee from our sin. May we be rescued from the coming wrath of God before it is too late. May we turn to the love of God in Christ and receive Him as our hope for today.

Great Awakenings new Facebook page

I want to introduce Great Awakenings new Facebook page. Everyone seems to have an answer. The political talking heads says it’s the fault of President Barack Obama or President George W. Bush, the Democrats or the Republicans, or Wall Street executives. The economists say it’s due to the fallout of the mortgage crisis, high oil and gas prices, or the increasing trade deficit. The man-on-the-street points toward a growing national debt and says, “We need to reduce our debt and get our spending under control.”

The Great American Experiment is now 230 years old. We have gone from 13 colonies to 50 states and from millions to trillions in national wealth. No doubt about it, the hand of God’s blessing has been on our country. Yet, what have we done with His blessings?

Our government, along with local businesses, families and churches across the country have managed to take the bounty of God and squander it in prodigal-son-fashion. Instead of being stewards, we have become owners. Instead of being thankful we have demanded more. Instead of managing wisely, we have spent and financed foolishly.

Our money is imprinted with the national motto “In God we trust”. Maybe we ought to change that to “In Money We Trust”. We believe that with enough money we can solve our government’s problems, build a larger congregation, have a happier home, or grow a more profitable business. Really? What about the God factor? A wise King once wrote, “Whoever trusts in his riches will fall, but the righteous [those who trust in God] will flourish like a green leaf” (Proverbs 11:28). Notice, it’s not the possessing of, but trusting in riches that predicts the downfall of people and nations.

Maybe God is strategically working through this financial crisis to humble us so we will turn from trusting in paper and ink and turn to the fortress of Almighty God. May we recognize the error of our ways and receive His gracious healing on our land that is so desperately needed. May He alone be our hope for today.

Praise Report: Country Gardens LifeFest

On Sunday, our Country Garden's LifeFest went great! Jesus was King of Country Gardens! The park manager said, "This is one of the greatest things to ever happen to this park". We shared the gospel through song, testimony and the preaching of the Word. The kids enjoyed the games and the food provided an atmosphere of conversation and connection with each other.

Many came out from the park, surrounding neighborhood and fellow believers came to support and pray for God's power to come. Several asked to us to come back. It was exciting to see such a good turn out and excitement from the park. I believe when the gospel is preached where there is sin and darkness it can bring a spirit of hope and peace if people receive God’s Word. It’s a ray of light in a cloud of darkness.

Thank you for praying and your encouragement. We’ll see where God takes us next.

Upcoming outreach at local mobile home park

I ask for special prayer for an outreach I’m doing this weekend in my hometown of Clay Center, Kansas.

I am hosting a mini-LifeFest festival at a local mobile home park and the area of town surrounding it. Here is the information below.

WHEN: Sunday, August 28, 10:30 a.m.
WHERE: Country Gardens mobile home park, 210 12th St.
WHO: Residents of Country Gardens, the area neighborhood and whoever wants to come!

Features . . .

Music by Shelly and Morgan Bradford
Life-changing story Tianna LaMore
Good news message by Clint Decker

Also . . .

FREE lunch provided by Angel's Mercy Kitchen
Games for kids!

Honestly, I am excited! It was not until 32 years old that I walked down the aisle with the woman of my dreams. In high school I began a list of what I wanted in the one I was to marry. One thing was a woman who dressed modestly. God answered that. He gave me a woman who was modest and absolutely beautiful too.

Today, modesty seems like a foreign word in our sex-obsessed nation. Purity, innocence and respect seem out of date too. Where are the modern ladies and gentlemen that have a sense of self-respect and are respectful to each other? Our nation is crumbling from within as we selfishly feed our passions. In government, the church and home it has brought disgrace and ruined marriages and families.

We were born with these sexual desires. Our Creator gave them to us. However, they were meant to be fulfilled strictly within the boundaries of marriage. For centuries men and women have continually rebelled against this protective barrier to their own peril, pursuing all forms of sexual gratification. This has tested God’s patience. The Scripture says, “Therefore, God gave them up in the lusts of their heart to impurity, to the dishonoring of their bodies among themselves” (Romans 1:24).

Since our society is so accepting and saturated with the influence of sex how can we live differently? Through the holiness of God. In the entire universe, He is the only being who is absolutely pure. There is no spot of sin, evil or any form of immorality within Him. When we turn to Jesus through faith and in repentance of our sin, an incredible thing happens. God through His Spirit pours His holiness into us. We become holy as He is holy and receive the power to walk in it day by day.

The love, mercy and holiness of God give us a second chance. We can come to Him individually or collectively as a nation. Then if we turn from our immorality and seek Him for His cleansing we will be given a chance to start over again. Even if we have sacrificed our innocence on the altar of impulse there is still hope. By faith, may we receive that hope for today.

Fifth Podcast Now Available

In June, we did a public launch of brand new ministry – Hope for Today podcast. Since then God has been sending people to listen to the program from across the United States and there have even been some listeners from Japan and China.

Recently, we completed our fifth podcast episode. By mid-August we’ll have our sixth one. These programs are around 3-minutes long. They are short and I believe very interesting. People will enjoy listening to them as God draws them to Himself.

Take a listen yourself. If you have ITunes, please subscribe. Greatest of all, use this as an evangelistic tool. Pass the link onto others. Share it on your Facebook page, on your Twitter account, email and text others about it. Also, I encourage you to make a comment about the program on ITunes so people can read your helpful review.

Click on the link below. Take a listen. Subscribe. Write a review. Forward it onto others. Pray. Pray for God to use this message and technology to reach souls around the world. It takes time to create a podcast audience. May God use you to speed it along!

http://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/hope-for-today/id429443293

Praise Report: Orlando, Florida

Greetings in Christ! Just a few days ago I got back home from a jam-packed-six-day-ministry-trip to Orlando, Florida. It was the annual National Event for Operation Save America (OSA). I was invited to attend by some friends. The trip left ministry stretch marks all over me. Most of the things I did, I have never done before.

During my time I participated in several outreaches including two abortion clinics, the neighborhoods of two abortion doctors, an Islamic mosque, joined in two memorial services for aborted babies and attended the jury trial of a local abortion doctor in Orange County district court and all I can say is “Wow!”.

As I saw it, OSA sees themselves primarily as biblical evangelists. They preach the gospel in the open air at the places were sin is tolerated and growing like a noxious weed. They passionately, courageously and steadfastly call men and women to Christ through exposing the sins of abortion, homosexuality, the false religion of Islam and other sins plaguing our nation. I agree with their main message of repentance. It is the same as the Old Testament prophets, John the Baptist, Jesus and the early church. Apostle Peter declared in the open air, “Repent therefore, and turn again, that your sins may be blotted out, that times of refreshing may come from the presence of the Lord” (Acts 3:19-20).

I had the opportunity to preach the good news from a sidewalk to some National Organization for Women (NOW) volunteers that were in support of the local clinic. What a joy! When women walked into the clinics I joined with others in urging them to choose a better way for their unborn baby. I prayed the Scriptures to myself interceding on behalf of the people and the unborn babies going in and out of the clinics. When a Muslim outside the local mosque told me, “I am drawn to Islam because Allah gives me peace” I lifted up Jesus and urged Him to turn from Allah and to Christ who offers true and lasting peace.

I visited with a woman who walked by an abortion clinic holding her three week old grandbaby. She said her daughter nearly followed through on an abortion at the clinic. Praise God she didn’t. Also, praise God that she listened as we shared the gospel she along with her cousin yielded their lives to Jesus.

While eating lunch at a park with our group one day, God led me to visit with a local gentleman sitting by himself, Phillip. He was a Haitian man who spoke broken English. As we visited I turned the corner and God opened the doors to share the gospel. Awhile later we kneeled at the picnic bench with two other believers that came over and Phillip prayed to surrender his life to Jesus. Amen!

I went with my opinions about this type of ministry based on what I have heard from mainstream secular and Christian media over the years. Neither media group seemed to encourage this type of ministry based on their history of reporting. However, I’m sold on it! Yes, I didn’t agree with everything I saw and heard, but most of it I did. And, I can’t deny the fruit of their labors. It is a fact that God has used them to save thousands of babies and thousands of lost souls. They weep over them and the sins of our nation. They are passionate to be holy as God is holy. They are some model biblical preachers, mining the Word for its deep truths and sharing it with others. They love in word and deed giving themselves in countless ways and they identify with the sufferings of Christ. Yet, they continue on because of their love for Jesus and others. What an inspiration they were to me to set my face like flint toward the cross of Christ and press on in faith, boldness and holy love.

HOPE FOR TODAY: Redefining the American Spirit

President Abraham Lincoln with congressional approval signed a proclamation calling for a national observance of “public humiliation, prayer and fasting” held in September 1861. Months earlier the Union troops came under fire at Fort Sumpter. History shows it was the beginning of the civil war. While pondering the fate of his nation, Lincoln shared these words with his fellow countrymen. He said to offer “fervent supplications to Almighty God for the safety and welfare of these States, His blessings on their arms, and a speedy restoration of peace.” The President knew he needed power and wisdom beyond Himself. He knew only the God of heaven and earth could save his divided country.

Lincoln’s American Spirit was much different than our modern version. In the face of natural disasters, political turmoil or economic uncertainty, today’s leaders call on the American people primarily to depend on themselves. Today’s version of the American Spirit is human-centered. It calls for a tough, independent, self-determined mindset that comes with an accomplish-anything attitude.

Although it appears admirable and sounds great on the surface, is that really our nation’s best and brightest way to respond to crises? The self-reliant spirit that does not need God actually enflames the anger of God. However, the humble and God-fearing receive His ear and all of heaven’s resources. The Scriptures say, “For God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble” (1 Peter 5:6). Crises reveal our limits as mortal human beings. We cannot stop a tornado. We cannot purge injustice from our world. We cannot control the behavior of every person. Such things highlight our powerlessness. It shouts our need for a Savior outside of ourselves.

There is only one being who is all powerful, all knowing and eternal in existence who can intervene in the course of human affairs – Almighty God. Centuries ago, He intervened by sending His Son, Jesus, from heaven to earth. Through Jesus’ life, death, burial and resurrection God altered the direction of world history.

May the American Spirit come to be synonymous with humility before our Creator. When our nation faces future crises may a holy and humble remnant bow before the Most High and with unwavering faith watch Him work for good in our nation. May God Himself be our nation’s hope for today and future generations.

<georss:box>39.3587907 -97.14871779999997 39.3950907 -97.10076779999999</georss:box>

New Podcast Ministry

We are launching a new ministry for Great Awakenings - the HOPE FOR TODAY podcast.

The podcast channel on Itunes is “HOPE FOR TODAY” and the author is “Clint Decker”. It’s a 4-minute program that is the audio edition of my monthly column that appears in local newspapers. New episodes will be uploaded on a monthly basis.

Go to www.greatawakenings.org and click on the links on the homepage to subscribe to the podcast through Itunes or set up a feed to receive new episodes. I know you will be blessed by it and I hope you can encourage others to listen and subscribe as well.

Podcasting is a technology that has been around for several years. More and more people are producing podcasts and listening to them on their computers and phones.

This ministry is designed to reach the internet and tech savvy audience with the good news of Christ through discussing the current events and trends of our day. The Apostle Paul wrote, “I have become all things to all people, that by all means I might save some. I do it all for the sake of the gospel, that I may share with them in its blessings” (1 Cor. 9:22-23).

My friend and ministry partner, Rod Keen, is the narrator on the program and takes care of the production. Kyle Bauer, General Manager of our local radio station, has given us permission to use the station to produce the program at no charge.

Take a listen and let me know what you think. Please pray to the Lord that He would take this far and wide to help advance His gospel.

HOPE FOR TODAY: Discovering a Man's Purpose

Tony Fadell. Have you ever heard of him? He was the architect of something you probably heard of – the IPod. Under the direction of Apple CEO, Steve Jobs, Fadell and his team developed the new technology. What was the purpose for this industry-changing gadget? According to Jobs, it was to put “1,000 songs in your pocket”.

The God of heaven and earth is the architect of human beings. He made men and made us with a purpose. What is it? As I read the Scriptures, I see repeatedly how God purposed a man to protect, provide and lead those whom they have responsibility for.

Society has its own idea about men. One is the TV-sitcom guy. They are portrayed as lazy, lacking character and more interested in being entertained than anything else. The other is the work-all-the-time guy. These men are consumed with work, highly driven and find their personal worth tethered to their occupation.

God called it “good” when he made the man, and into the fabric of our being He built an instinctive desire to protect, provide and lead. However, that is to be carried out within the framework of two very important commandments: love God and love others.

Men, this is where we get side tracked and draw some valid criticism. The TV-sitcom man thinks life is about his fun and the work-all-the-time guy his career. In neither case is there a humble attitude of love through service to those whom we have been given responsibility for.

God has a vision for your life as a man. It is discovered through Jesus, the standard for all men. He was one of the hardest working men of His day and during a time of crisis, we saw the heart of what a real man was. It was the moment He suffered and died upon His cross. There He willingly laid down His life for the sake of others. It was not about His entertainment, nor personal agenda. As men, we are called to live the same way. Regardless if you are married or single observe the humble attitude in this statement from the Bible, “Husbands, love your wives, as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her” (Ephesians 5:25).

Men, Jesus has pioneered a new path for you. Turn to Him and aspire to become the kind of man He was – and still is today. May He be your hope for today.

A New Ministry Opportunity for My Wife

I wanted to pass along some information regarding a major transition my wife, Kathe, has made.

When Kathe and I married she was a Kansas State Representative until she stepped away in 2006 to take a run at Kansas Lt. Governor. Unfortunately, things didn’t work out so she began praying about the future. In time, she came on staff with Great Awakenings and the two of us worked full-time together until 2009. Then her mother’s health began to fail so she stepped away from ministry to care for her. She is doing much better as I write. Over the last year, Kathe started back to work with another local ministry, Kingdom Promotions.

When Senator Sam Brownback began his general election campaign for Kansas Governor last year, Kathe began thinking about serving in the Brownback Administration in some capacity. He was elected, but God opened no doors. Kathe simply released it into God’s hands and was very content with where God had her.

Then in March there was a turn of events. She received a call from the Department of Social and Rehabilitation Services (SRS) in Topeka offering her a position. After much discussion, prayer and waiting upon the Lord, Kathe and I felt the assurance it was God’s plan for her to take the opportunity.

She will be Director of Economic and Employment Support and serve on the SRS leadership team. It will be a full-time job, based in Topeka. She has already found a temporary place to stay throughout this year. We know there will be difficulties in the road ahead, but knowing we are walking in obedience to God will make it easier to handle them.

This transition with Kathe should have no affect on Great Awakenings. God’s call on my life to preach the gospel remains. Since 2011 started, myself, along with our board of directors have been planning and implementing a new set of aggressive ministry plans.

A few weeks ago we confirmed The Rick Webb Family, a successful southern gospel group from North Carolina, to lead our new looking annual Celebration of Ministry this fall. Our new podcast ministry will be launched shortly, we will be filming the pilot for a new Sunday morning gospel preaching television program soon and we are retooling our LifeFest ministry and hope to begin discussions with multiple cities this year.

Please keep Kathe in your prayers as she travels back and forth, for our marriage and for success in her new position. She just doesn’t see this as a job, but as a ministry. For years God has given her a heart for troubled youth and families and has also given her tremendous talents to operate comfortably in the political arena. God has a exciting future for my wife along with countless ways to make a difference in families across Kansas, “For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans for wholeness and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope” (Jer. 29:11).

HOPE FOR TODAY: Great Power Calls for Great Responsibility

When Young Peter Parker was still growing into his newfound superpower as Spiderman, during a pivotal moment, he remembered a comment his Uncle made to him, “With great power comes great responsibility”.

No matter if someone is a leading political official, the top of a successful company, or the head of an influential organization they all have something in common. Their position comes with a level of power and authority.

The need for responsible management of power is essential, as some leaders will grow to like their power and work to retain it. As a result, self-preserving decisions will be made. In the short term, such decisions will bring success. In the long term, they will bring devastating consequences. Additionally, a power-hungry leader will begin to experience the inward effects of the poisonous cocktail they willingly drink. It is a potent mixture of pride, arrogance and selfishness along with a shot of greed.

Eventually, this poison will so weaken leaders that what they have built will mercilessly be ripped from their fingers in embarrassment and shame.

What if someone occupied the seat of power from the mindset of serving rather than receiving, humility rather than pride, generosity rather than greed? What if they never operated out of a self-preservation motive? What if they did what was right, good and just even if they knew it might cost them dearly?

There is an example of someone who did lead that way – Jesus. In three years, He rose from an obscure carpenter to one of the most powerful and influential figures of His day. Today, nearly 2,000 years later, His name is known worldwide and the movement He started, Christianity, numbers in the billions of followers.

Jesus made a startling statement that reveals His unique style of leadership, “For even the Son of Man [Jesus] came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many” (Mark 10:45).

What would happen to our world if all those in positions of power led from the mindset of Jesus? What a difference it would make. May those with great power exercise great responsibility. May leaders choose to humble themselves before the King of Kings and Lord of Lords, calling upon Him to change their hearts that He may be their hope for today and for those whom they lead.

HOPE FOR TODAY: Finding Hope in Easter

AP Bangkok Bureau Chief, Todd Pitman, came on the scene the morning after the Japan disaster. He wrote, “A man who has not seen his wife since . . . minutes before the tsunami told me with the utmost certainty that she MUST be alive. After failing to find her at seven different shelters, he began searching for her inside a city gym-turned-morgue where the bodies of 300 tsunami victims lay under blue tarps, waiting to be identified.”

As the death toll continues to mount, people are still searching for their loved ones amidst the apocalyptic scene in Japan. Since 2011 started there also has been a deadly earthquake in New Zealand, catastrophic flooding in Australia and unrest throughout the Arab nations.

Events like these on the world stage are not new. We live on a fragile planet and into all this madness enters Easter. It is not about a sale at the department store, days off from school or Easter egg hunts. It is more. It is about God’s Son, Jesus. He suffered, died and rose again from the dead on our behalf.

Many believers in Jesus use the term “Good Friday” to talk about the day of His death. Perhaps we could also call it “Black Friday”. On it, Jesus, an innocent man, took our place in death. He was separated from His Father receiving His judgment and wrath for the sins of all mankind. It was a gruesome day of suffering and death.

The pain due to the suffering and death we have seen this year is for a season. What Jesus experienced through his crucifixion was for a season too. He did it so we would not be separated from God and suffer without Him in the lake of fire – for an eternity.

Sunday is Resurrection Day - a day of hope. Jesus is alive! He overcame sin and death through His bodily resurrection. Through it, He provided a way of escape from the judgment and wrath of God. Through it, He provided freedom from sin and death leading to genuine and lasting hope.

Easter represents light over darkness, good defeating evil and freedom for the captive. The Scripture says, “May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that by the power of the Holy Spirit you may abound in hope” (Roman 15:13). May Jesus be your hope for today.

HOPE FOR TODAY: What Happens during Mardi Gras is Recorded in Heaven

Costumes, parades, fattened calves, masks and of course, beads. They are all connected with Mardi Gras. For the unfamiliar it is a gigantic party in New Orleans each year, but to the familiar it is a whole lot more.

Mardi Gras means Fat Tuesday, and has become known as a season of celebration. It officially starts 12 days after Christmas and goes until midnight on the Tuesday before Ash Wednesday.

Some historians say the origin goes back to the Roman Empire in the second century. Over time the Roman Catholic Church tried to Christianize the pagan event which has become a mixture of religious and pagan rituals and traditions.

Today Mardi Gras celebrations are found in cities across the United States and at least 12 nations. There are millions of people that participate. New Orleans is the face of Mardi Gras, which routinely has over 600,000 people gather each year on Fat Tuesday.

From the Roman Empire to the French Quarters, the days of Mardi Gras are well known as days of self-indulgence of every sort, and that is the point. There is a sense of freedom to engage in whatever your heart desires. Open drunkenness, sexual immorality, and vulgarity of every kind are found – until the stroke of midnight on Fat Tuesday. Then from Ash Wednesday through the 40 days of Lent people are to confess their sins and prepare themselves for Easter Sunday.

Have you ever seen the commercial, “What happens in Vegas stays in Vegas?” That slogan represents the culture of Mardi Gras. Indulge now, confess later and all will be well. That is a dangerous belief. If you plan to do something wrong, but it is legal and fun, and afterwards you intend to confess your foolishness does that mean it is okay? The mindset that we can do whatever we want, offer a half-hearted confession and think that God’s love will cover our sin is a huge misunderstanding.

How foolish to think we can deceive the Most High God. He knows our motives and the sincerity of our hearts. God will not grant forgiveness to a pre-planned, unremorseful confession that is simply based on a religious ritual after a season of wide-eyed and highhanded sin, which you anticipate doing again anyway. There is no mercy for such souls, only the judgment of God. Scripture says, “It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God.” (Heb. 10:31)

Jesus blood was not shed to give our guilty conscience a brief and shallow season of peace while we continue in a sinful lifestyle. Rather, His blood was shed to make us whole and holy. His precious gift of forgiveness came at a tremendous cost. It requires a genuine confession of sin with a truly repentant heart and life. As we enter this time of Lent may our hearts be humble and holy before the Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Receive His gift of forgiveness and hope for today.

HOPE FOR TODAY: What if our Religion has it all Wrong?

“You . . . will say, ‘We ate and drank in your presence, and you taught in our streets’ . . . but he will say ‘I tell you, I do not know where you come from. Depart from me, all you workers of evil!’” (Luke 13:26-27) Jesus was speaking to a large crowd telling them that one day many of them might be surprised to find they had it all wrong.

In the United States today there are many different religions. The big ones people identify themselves with, according to a Pew Forum on Religion & Public survey, are Protestant Christians (51.3%), Catholics (23.9%), Mormons (1.7%), Jews (1.7%), Atheists (1.6%) and Muslims (.6%). Clearly, the majority of U.S. citizens are religious, even the atheists. They are their own god.

Why are so many of us religious? Maybe we were born with an inclination to worship just like we were born with a desire to eat and drink. In our house of worship we may enjoy the feeling of community, helping others and learning. Our religious exercises may bring a sense of hope, a peace and security. Perhaps we even find some ease with the guilt we bear and helpful counsel for the challenges of our life. This appears good, but is that the overall purpose of our chosen religion or respective form of worship?

What if we got it all wrong? What happens if five minutes after we die the self-professed Christian, Catholic, Mormon, Jew, Atheist and Muslim all go “Oops!” Obviously, it is too late then. Now is the time to begin questioning our faith so we face our future with confidence and not fear or doubt.

Jesus said, “Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven.” (Matthew 7:21) Well, what is the will or desire of the God of heaven? It is to love Him and love others. How do you love God? You love Him by obeying His commandments and believing in His only Son, Jesus. Through God and His mission for us do we find who we were created to worship.

Do not be among that number who will be eternally disillusioned five minutes after their last breath. Turn from your attempts at being religious. Discover what it means to know God personally through Jesus. Go beyond rituals to a relationship. Go beyond good deeds to a life transformed and on mission with God. Go beyond knowing about God to walking with Him moment by moment. Before it is too late, lay the title deed to your life down at the feet of the one who made you. Follow Him and embrace His hope for you today.

Egyptian Crisis

Remember to pray daily for the nation of Egypt and the ongoing crisis. God has many people throughout this great country that know Him and love Him. May the Lord protect His church there during this time and use His servants to be a genuine help to their country in this time of crisis.

HOPE FOR TODAY: A Resolution for Real Happiness

This year an estimated 139 million Americans will do some type of New Year’s resolution. That is about 45% of our population. By June, 92% will have failed to follow through while only 8% will make it to the finish line.

A resolution is a determination to make a change. It is a statement of purpose backed up with a sense of resolve and firmness, like “I make a resolution to lose 25 pounds this year.” Some of those changes are related to health, education, career, finances, relationships and habits.

What is the underlying reason for our resolutions? Likely, it is something deeper than just making changes. For some it could be because they are not happy with how things are going in their lives? Someone might have thought, “If I can just get this mountain of debt paid off I can be at peace with myself.”

With that in mind, consider this statement from author and motivational speaker, Stephen Shapiro. After reviewing the data from a major research project he said, “People who achieve their resolutions every year are NO happier than those who do not set resolutions or who are unsuccessful in achieving them.”

Personally, I found that surprising when I read it. However, after some further thought, it made sense to me. We can work hard at changing the outward circumstances of our lives thinking it will affect our inward restlessness. Yet, after some time has passed, no matter whether we were successful or not, that lack of happiness is still there.

Through sheer determination, self-will and a positive attitude we cannot control everything in our lives or world. We are not gods. We may be able to produce for ourselves happiness for a moment or a brief season of time, but we cannot produce anything that is for a lifetime that continues despite our circumstances from day to day.

There is only one God and He created us that we may know Him personally. Only through His Son, Jesus, can we find answers to the deep things of the heart and soul. In Him, we will discover that He is whom we have really needed all along. He once said, “Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest” (Matthew 11:28). When we come to Jesus and walk with Him in faithful obedience, we will find His indwelling presence always there providing all we need no matter the situation in our lives.

You will only find temporary happiness in your resolutions, but you will find lasting peace through Jesus. In Him is your hope for today.

HOPE FOR TODAY: Miracle Beyond 34th Street

In 1947, one of the most beloved Christmas movies of all-time was released, “Miracle on 34th Street”. It was an instant hit winning five Oscars, obtaining millions of viewers and becoming one of the top 10 most inspiring films of the last 100 years, according to the American Film Institute.
In the movie, Kris Kringle (the real Santa Claus), becomes incensed when he observes the designated Macy’s Santa flat out drunk during the Thanksgiving Day parade. Eventually, Kris is awarded the job himself. Despite his success at the job, he spends the movie trying to convince people, especially the adults, that he is not a fake, but the real Santa. Through a number of twists and turns the end of the movie finds a judge being put on the spot to decide if Kris Kringle is the real Santa or not.

Although I love the heartwarming film, the real story of Christmas is noticeably absent. Just as Kris Kringle was incensed at his Santa imposter so Jesus likely is at the revision of modern Christmas where He is replaced with a business friendly Santa Claus. The origins of Christmas go back to between 3 and 5 B.C. On a starlit night in the small country town of Bethlehem was born a little baby boy named Jesus who would eventually grow up to change the world. Years later, followers turned His birth into a celebration calling it Christmas after Jesus the Christ child.

Santa can offer the gift of a toy and or other things, but only Jesus continues to offer the original and greatest Christmas gift ever – the forgiveness of sins for all those who will believe in Him. The Bible says about Jesus’ birth, “She will bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins” (Matthew 1:21). This gift promises to bring the hope of a new life, freedom from guilt and rest for the soul. As part of your task to find the perfect gift this Christmas, turn to the Bible and read about the greatest gift that is still available and without charge. May Jesus bring hope to your Christmas this season.

HOPE FOR TODAY: Lifted to Freedom

“Are they alive?” Friends, family and the world all wondered after the Chilean gold and copper mine collapse on August 5. Meanwhile, 2,300 feet beneath the surface 33 miners began desperate attempts at escape and survival. Efforts to find a pathway out or to send up signals to identify their location all ended without success. There the 33 men sat, in an emergency shelter, the size of a living room, with a 48-hour supply of food, water and limited medical supplies. As the weight of total darkness, dust and despair rested upon them they wondered if that mine would also become their grave. Survival was up to them, but a rescue was not. Their fate rested in the hands of others.

Back on the surface, the Chilean President, Sebastian Pinera, called out to his nation and the world to help rescue these men. And the response came. Businesses, governments and individuals gave sacrificially. Then on day 17 a breakthrough came! Contact was made with miners through a hole the size of a grapefruit that was bore through the rock. Hope along with much needed supplies came to them. No one knew that the miners would need to face an additional 52 days before hope would come a second time. And it came on October 13, after 800 people worked night and day to finally bore a hole through the rock where they could be lifted to freedom.

In a way, many of us are like the miners. We are trapped beneath our sin and brokenness. We may feel like there is no way out and that hopelessness and despair are all around us. Yet, we are unaware what is taking place in heaven. There, God knows our situation. He has decided not to leave us to ourselves. Jesus, His only Son, was sent to earth to suffer, die and rise again to show us the way to freedom. God has released His message of good news through people all over the world. This good news is our hope. It is our rescue capsule. If we will only reverse our sinful ways and cling to Jesus, then we will be lifted to freedom.

Miner, Jose Henriquez, led prayer services twice a day, calling upon God for His help. A Christian ministry got them the Jesus Film on mp3 players along with Bibles. Soon they realized there were 34 miners, not just 33. God was with them. Henriquez wrote a note with a Scripture verse quoting Psalm 95:4, "In his hand are the depths of the earth, and mountain peaks belong to him."

You may feel trapped. Recognize God is there. He’s waiting for you to call out and trust Him with your whole heart. Now you will find your hope for today.

HOPE FOR TODAY: Woody Allen’s Great Delusion

Legendary filmmaker Woody Allen has over 40 films to his name along with three Academy Awards. In September he released his latest film, “You Will Meet a Tall Dark Stranger”.

The New York Times columnist, Dave Itzkoff, interviewed the 74 year old about his film and life. Itzkoff noted the supernatural is important to the movie, which opened the door for Allen to comment about his view of faith. Allen said, “I was interested in the concept of faith in something. This sounds so bleak when I say it, but we need some delusions to keep us going.” Allen is not alone in his sentiments. The results of a major religious survey by the Pew Forum on Religion and Public Life found the largest increase was in the category of “Unaffiliated”. It grew to 16.1% of all adults and 25% of 18-29 year olds. A majority of this group says they do not believe “in anything in particular” and that religion is “not important” to them.

Allen has it backwards. Faith in God is not delusional. Rather, having no faith in God and putting faith primarily in oneself is delusional. It is a grave mistake to believe that all I need is myself – my own goodness, education, wealth or personal effort. It is unwise to simply decide God does not exist or that you do not want Him in your life so you can continue with your lifestyle.

Throughout the history of mankind, the God who made the heavens and the earth has shown He is real through a myriad of ways. He has revealed Himself through Jesus, His only Son, who was a real historical figure who rose again from the dead. God has also revealed Himself through the Bible a truthful and accurate sacred text and through millions of people who have personally encountered this God and have been everlastingly changed.

The delusion of trusting in oneself does not stand up well in times of unexplained tragedy, or with the guilt and shame from our mistakes and in the faces of death and dying. Itzkoff asked the 74 year old Allen about the aging process. He stated, “I’ve experienced that thing where you wake up in the middle of the night and you start to think about your own mortality and envision it, and it gives you a little shiver.” Where is the hope, the peace?

God is real. Put your trust in Him. Jesus said, “Do not let your hearts be troubled. Trust in God; trust also in me” (John 14:1). Do not delude yourself anymore. God knows your name. He is calling you. Turn from yourself and to Him. May you find hope for today.

HOPE FOR TODAY: Rich vs. Poor

Tax cuts enacted by the previous presidential administration are set to expire the end of this year. There is much discussion over whether to maintain, change or eliminate these cuts. As I looked at various articles on the subject a familiar theme surfaced that went something like this, “Let us have the cuts expire on the rich, but remain for the poor”. This theme also showed up during the healthcare debate and a series of bailouts.

In times like these, the rich and poor become political footballs that seem to be used to help others achieve their chosen agendas. When it comes to cutting government costs, people stereotype the poor as victims to help save their programs. When it comes to increasing government revenue, people stereotype the rich as villains to get their money, in order to help save or expand their programs.

Fanning the flames of division between the rich and poor is dangerous. There is no common sense reason to pursue this. Fostering division over income levels or positions in society opens the door for class warfare, pitting American against American.

Our country can rise above this growing division by running quickly in the opposite direction. The root of division is when people are out for their own self-preservation. The foundation for unity is when people serve others, putting the needs of their neighbors above their own. One of the two Greatest Commandments from the Bible communicates this saying, “You shall love your neighbor as yourself” (Matthew 22:39).

As a nation, what if we sought to give rather then get and purposed to help rather than to have? I believe it would dramatically change our culture, put the political straw men arguments to bed and shatter inaccurate stereotypes.

The God who made you and me is an example of selfless giving. When God gave Jesus, His Son, to our world He demonstrated selfless giving so that we may receive His rich blessings. When we turn from our sin and place our faith in Jesus, God opens His doors of blessing.

There is no favoritism or partiality with God. Rich or poor, black or white, man or woman, known or unknown, all are alike to Him. God welcomes all. Everyone stands on level ground before Him. May you find hope today in whatever circumstances you face, by turning to Jesus and giving yourself away to others, no matter your position in life.

HOPE FOR TODAY: Arizona Law - Beneath the Surface

Arizona Rancher Robert Krentz was making an attempt to help an illegal immigrant, who was trespassing on his sprawling ranch, when he was gunned down in cold blood in March this year. At the same time, being debated in the Arizona legislature was an illegal immigration bill that was eventually passed and signed into law on April 23, a month after Krentz was murdered.

The law has created an incredible firestorm across the country with a host of influential opponents and proponents making their opinions known and taking sides. On the surface, some have made it about elections, race, border security or state rights versus federal jurisdiction. Yet, beneath the surface it is about something else - people. It is about the growing list of victims, like Robert Krentz.

For years illegal immigration, especially along the Mexico-United States border, has been a problem. It is nothing new. However, something has changed in recent years providing greater urgency for politicians and regular citizens to speak up and take some risk.

Although most illegal immigrants are peaceful and hardworking there are significant numbers that pose a threat. Reports show how some illegal’s are guilty of a laundry list of crimes including police killings, drug trafficking, human trafficking, rape, kidnapping, auto theft, I.D. theft, many sexual crimes, many types of fraud, home invasions, assaults, and much more. According to some crime statistics, 27% of all federal prisoners are illegal immigrants and many have been arrested at least eight times.

No matter if someone is Democrat or Republican, Mexican citizen or United States citizen or even a legal or illegal immigrant – most reasoning people want the senseless killing to stop, kidnappings to end and others to live without fear in their own home.

When God sent His only Son from heaven to earth He was not concerned about poll numbers, fund raising or voting blocks. There was no sign of self-preservation in His decision. He laid it all on the line when Jesus was born into our world in the little town of Bethlehem. And why did He do it? Why did Jesus leave the glory of heaven and come to live with us? He did it for people, like you and me. Jesus didn’t come to create an organization, build an institution or establish a religion. He came for people. From heaven God looked down and saw the power of sin at work in our world and its destructive force. Out of love for you and me He took action. The Scripture says, “But God demonstrates His own love toward us in that while we were yet sinners Christ died for us” (Romans 5:8). In the midst of this darkness, if people will just turn from their sin and believe in Him with all their heart they will find freedom, peace and a new hope in Christ. Indeed, may you find your hope in Him today.

The Oil Spill: A Lesson in Response

On April 20, an explosion on an oil platform in the Gulf of Mexico killed 11 people, sent the entire structure to the seabed, while triggering a gushing oil spill that has leaked an unbelievable 85 million gallons at the lowest count.

BP, Halliburton, Deepwater Horizon, Mineral Management Service, EPA, House and Senate committees and the White House all made choices over the course of time which unknowingly laid the groundwork for this accident.

There were choices made and now there is a waterfall of response covering everything you can think of all going on simultaneously. No matter if it is an oil spill or something else there are five kinds of responses: Slow, quick, right, wrong or even worse - none. Sometimes the immediate, but always the long-term determines what was or what should have been the best response.

Through this oil spill, we have seen the importance of a wise and quick response when it comes to a high stakes situation. More valuable then saving Gulf Coast jobs and its ecosystem is the saving of your soul and mine. Jesus has come from heaven, split time in half and presented us with a choice that demands a response with high stakes consequences. You have an invisible immortal soul within you. Upon death, you will live on in eternity through that soul. Where will be your final destination – heaven or hell? The destination you end up is determined by how you responded to situations in this life. Have you chosen to live your way or Jesus’ way? Jesus once said, “If anyone would come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross and follow me” (Mark 8:34). If you choose the way of Jesus, you choose heaven. What will it be for you? The stakes could not be higher. There must be a response. I urge you to respond wisely and quickly. Through Jesus may you find your hope for today.

How to Live in Turbulent Times

Since January, major earthquakes have hit Haiti, Chile and Argentina taking thousands of lives. England, Germany, the United States and other industrialized nations continue to increase their government debt while posing a threat to the world’s financial markets. Extreme Islamic terrorism which drove the 9/11 attacks, continues as a daily threat in America and across many other nations. War-like tensions continue brewing between Iran and Israel and North and South Korea. Violent crime in metropolitan areas like New York City and Chicago are killing more people then are dying in the war in Afghanistan. Political battles over health care, illegal immigration and the economy are creating nationwide division across the country. The moral fabric of our world continues to decline with people calling right wrong and wrong right.

What’s happening? Where is all this going? How should we live in the midst of all this? Some people may have watched too many movies and are ready to dive into their bunker preparing for the end. For the rest of us, let me provide some suggestions to help us live confidently in turbulent times.

Love others. Overcome the polarizing differences in our world with love. Demonstrate love by praying to God for the people who oppose you. And show love through actions. Do acts of kindness towards your opposition. Defeat evil with good.

Be holy. To be holy means to separate yourself from sinful things. It is like choosing to be honest in a dishonest world or to be sexually pure in a sexually promiscuous world. There seems to be no moral restraint with a tsunami of sinful and wicked behavior touching the entire globe. Go against the current. Be holy.

Humbly submit to one another. Open defiance of authority is everywhere. These attitudes and actions against parents, employers and government only deepen the divide. Only humble and mutual submission towards one another will bridge the divide and allow each other’s voices to be heard.

Live justly. There is much corruption and deceit from Washington to Main Street and even in our own homes. There must be a remnant who will hold up the banner of truth. Sometimes people should be confronted and issues exposed. May we stand for justice in wisdom with gentleness and respect.

Turn to Jesus. Our world needs help. The real and lasting help we need will not come from government, media, education, upright living, time, or good strategies. We need Jesus. He is the way, the truth and the life we desperately need. Our hearts can be troubled when looking at the global landscape. Jesus once said, “Let not your hearts be troubled. Believe in God; believe also in me” (John 14:1). Let us put our trust in Jesus. Only He can give us true and enduring peace in a world filled with worried and anxiety-laden people. May Jesus bring you hope for today.

Commencement Wisdom

This month 3.1 million students are expected to graduate from high school and hundreds of thousands will be receiving their college diploma. The teenagers and twenty-something’s will reach a milestone and have a new beginning for themselves. Here are a few pieces of commencement wisdom I would like to pass along to each graduate.

Rejoice and celebrate your achievement. Years have been invested to get to this point. Do not let it slide by without enjoying the moment. Achieving something is more fun when we celebrate the accomplishment.

Recall the people that helped you make it. No man is an island to himself. Thank your parents for any encouragement they provided and take a moment to understand the emotions they are experiencing, as their little boy or girl from years ago will soon be leaving home. Thank your teachers for their investment. Thank the friends who were always there.

Release the heartache connected with the journey. Your celebration may be bittersweet. Perhaps there is conflict within your family. Maybe you have had a hard time fitting in or you carry a broken heart. Whatever it is, you can choose to hold onto the pain or release it. Vow to let go of the past when you receive that diploma and embrace a new future.

Resolve to never give up. There were challenges in reaching this day and there will be challenges tomorrow. Researchers say that there was 27% of this year’s class that never made it to high school graduation and 44% that never made it to college graduation. You did. You overcame. Accept the fact that you will have obstacles, but resolve to learn from them and never give up.

Remember the Creator. A wise old King once said, “Remember also your Creator in the days of your youth” (Ecclesiastes 12:1). It is very easy to forget God or to no longer believe He exists in the days of youth. A sense of adventure, a desire to question, being at the peak of energy and strength, living for the moment and a feeling of independence can all lead there. There are many benefits with youth, but also some drawbacks. In the zeal for life, the tendency to live for self and forget God is a major one. Yet, He has a way of keeping us in-check. God has said there will be a day of reckoning, where we all must stand before Him and give an account for how we have lived.

As you reach this milestone, may you make the most of it by becoming a follower of God’s only Son, Jesus. This is the best way to start this new beginning in your life. Turn from your ways and seek His ways, the One who made you and knows you best. May your Creator bring you hope for today and your future.

Forgiving Others

“I will never forgive him for what he did!” Have you ever said that to yourself about someone who deeply hurt you? Imagine if you are in a relationship and you are cheated on. It would be hard to forgive. Right now, the families of high profile figures like Tiger Woods, Governor Mark Sanford and former Senator John Edwards are walking through this.

When someone you trust lies, physically abuses, verbally intimidates, tricks or uses you – it hurts. It causes emotional injuries that swell up into resentment, anger or bitterness, which all lead to unforgiveness.

What can you do when someone hurts you? 1) Bury it and never talk about it again. 2) Sever the relationship ties through divorce, quitting the job or ignoring the person. 3) Get revenge and make the person pay.

Is there a better way? Yes. Forgiveness. The person who has hurt or injured you emotionally is a “debtor”. They owe you. They owe you an apology, the effort to make things right or just something for the pain they caused. Forgiveness means you choose to “write off” their debt so you are no longer demanding the person apologize, make things right or do something to take away the pain.

Why forgive? First, because it is realistic and pro-active. In real life, the person who hurt you probably will not or simply cannot make things right on your terms. Therefore, forgiveness takes the first step and forgives rather than waits. Second, forgiveness heals. Only forgiveness can heal the resentment, anger or bitterness. It is a self-healing medication that you have the power to give yourself. Otherwise, you will carry the injury for the rest of your life.

The ultimate example on how to forgive is found in God. You and I hurt God through our sins. They were an offense and angered Him. As a result, we became a “debtor” to God. Even so, in an act of amazing grace and mercy, He took initiative to provide a way for our forgiveness. He sent His Son, Jesus, to pay the debt for our sins against Him.

I pray that we can learn from God’s example. As He extended grace and mercy to us who offended Him, may we extend the same towards those who have offended us. Jesus said, “For if you forgive others their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you” (Matthew 6:14). In Him may you find hope for today.

Victory though Defeat

College basketball fans live for “March Madness”. It is about this time a particular name is remembered each year – Coach John Wooden, the legendary coach of the UCLA Bruins.

He is remembered for the coaching success at UCLA, that most sports historians say will never be matched or likely even rivaled. It is a voluminous set of records. The ones most well known are the ten NCAA national championships in 12 years, 88 consecutive wins over four seasons and 19 conference championships.

Many fans of Coach Wooden, 99 years old, would say he has been a winner throughout his entire life. As a player, he won championships in high school and college. As a coach, he had an 81% winning percentage covering 40 years of coaching along with the UCLA championships.

When you look beneath the surface of Coach Wooden’s resume, you can see he was not always a winner. He has known defeat. During the state title game of 1927 for Martinsville (Indiana) High School, he missed a key shot and lost the championship. Wooden says, “Losing that game was the most disappointing thing that happened to me as a player.” He started coaching in 1932 at Dayton (Kentucky) High School. His first season was six wins and 11 losses. It took him 28 years of coaching through the high school and college ranks before he won his first title. Then at UCLA in 1964, he finally captured his first of many national championships.

Victory often requires that we first walk through the doors of defeat. Then we find that which appeared to bring defeat actually launched us through the doors of victory.

Centuries ago, Jesus faced a torturous crucifixion upon a wooden cross. Political leaders, religious leaders, His disciples, family and friends thought He had been defeated. Jesus faced the cross and those around Him with perspective and resolve. When He died, it was a long, dark day. The sense of defeat was all around.

Then Sunday came. After three days, His tombstone was rolled away and He came out – alive! Angels told those who came to His grave mourning His death, “Why do you seek the living among the dead? He is not here, but has risen” (Luke 24:6). Out of defeat came victory. The cross, which looked like it was going to be a symbol of defeat, three days later, became the greatest symbol of victory the world has ever known.

What has defeated you? Bring it to the cross of Christ. Lay your sin, pain and failures before Him in faith. Through Christ, find victory in your defeats. May that be your hope for today.

Haiti: God Is There

Jean, 13, was having fun kicking his soccer ball around when it turned into a nightmare. Suddenly the ground began moving underneath his feet and buildings started collapsing, including his home where his parents and five sisters were. The Haiti earthquake on January 12 took the lives of Jean’s family, making him an instant orphan.

Before the earthquake, Haiti’s population was 10 million with 46% under 18 years old. Out of that number, the United Nation’s reported there were 380,000 orphans. Following the earthquake, Jean and thousands more children have now dramatically increased the Haitian orphan population.

Nearly every year since 2000, there have been terrible floods or hurricanes that took thousands of lives, including large swaths of parents. For years, through natural disasters and many other causes orphan numbers have been growing.

In the midst of this orphan crisis, there is hope. According to the Joint Council on International Children’s Services, there are 187 licensed orphanages in Haiti that are caring for thousands of children. Many of these are operated by Christian missionaries, who have been transformed by the love of God and are compelled to go and demonstrate the same love they have been shown. These orphanages not only provide onsite care but work to find loving families who will adopt children. Immediately following the earthquake, the State Department said 300 American families were waiting to adopt a Haitian child.

The staff at these orphanages and adoptive families are being “God with skin on”. Rather then standing at a distance, separating themselves from the hurt, injustice and potential danger, they voluntarily run right into it.

Where was God during the earthquake? He was there. He was there long before and still is. One place you can see Him are the orphanages, each worker being His hands and feet.

Maybe you have had an earthquake in your life. Through a series of bad choices, your world has come crumbling down around you. Now, even in a sea of people and activities you feel lost and alone.

God, through His Son, Jesus Christ, and some people He may have placed in your life, comes and calls you by name. He is not standing at a distance. He is close, patiently and compassionately waiting, “Seek the Lord while he may be found; call upon him while he is near; let the wicked forsake his way . . . for [God] will abundantly pardon.” (The Bible, Isaiah 55:6-7, ESV)

The God of heaven, who created you and me, is calling. When you place your total trust in Him, you are instantly adopted and welcomed into His family, the family of God. He becomes your Father and those who follow Him become your brothers and sisters. Come into the family of God and find your hope for today.

Choosing Hope

Jill, a high school senior, took the emotional wrenching drive to the clinic. Nervously she sat, seeming unsure of herself. It felt like there was no other way to handle her unplanned pregnancy. There she was, all alone, in front of the abortion clinic. Where is the hope for her?

There are many who can identify with Jill. A college girl and boyfriend who are not ready for the challenges of parenthood. A pregnant single mom who cannot afford a fourth child. A couple who knows the baby they are carrying will be born with a disability.

Hope is that inward thing you need when you feel like you have no control over your circumstances. It is that desire which swells up and challenges you to believe that there is someone or something greater to live for then what you see around you.

If you are facing an abortion or know someone who is, there is a better way. Choose hope.

First, choose hope for your baby. It is not just a fetus. Any ultrasound or a simple hand on the belly will prove this. It is a baby. Let your mind dream of what your baby could become beyond the limits of money, health and other circumstances. Imagine. Dream great dreams for him or her.

Second, choose hope for yourself. Aborting your baby will smash your hope and etch a tragic memory you will never forget. Let this baby be a new beginning, like the start of a new year. Decide to accept this child and determine to be the very best father or mother your baby could ever have or, answer the wish of another couple. Maybe there is a loving family who would welcome your baby through adoption.

Third, choose hope through forgiveness. To abort or encourage someone to abort a living, breathing baby inside the womb is a sin in God’s sight. He calls it murder. The guilt from such an act weights heavy on a person. What can someone do to be relieved of the guilt and have hope restored?

Centuries ago, Jesus provided a way for total forgiveness of your sin. Through His life, He atoned for it. That means He covered your sin and took it away so He could have a relationship with you. The atoning work of Jesus is waiting for you. If you confess your sin to Him right now, He stands ready to forgive. God says, “For I will be merciful toward their iniquities (sins), and I will remember their sins no more” (The Bible, Hebrews 8:12, ESV). Imagine the hope that Jesus can bring by having your guilt finally lifted. The peace! The joy! May Jesus be your hope for today.

Remember that Christmas is a Birthday

My grandson, Konnor, was King for a day when he turned eight years old. He was the center of attention. In the morning, my wife and I called and wished him a happy birthday. He took treats to school, got cards in the mail, and had a birthday party with his own customized birthday cake, compliments of grandma.

When we celebrate someone’s birthday, it is normal to make them the center of attention. They are the focus of the party, gifts and treats. It is a happy time, surrounding the celebration of their birth.

Christmas Day is a gigantic worldwide birthday celebration for Jesus. Although Christians honor Him all year long, it is a concentrated time to remember the day when he came from heaven to earth in miraculous fashion being born through His virgin mother, Mary.

The modern Christmas Day does not seem to reflect the celebration of Jesus’ birth. Rather, it more bears the marks of an annual family gathering accompanied with gift giving and food while the Birthday Boy sits quietly in the background.

How can we make Christmas Day more about Jesus? It is very simple. Go to God in prayer and say, “God what would your Son like for His birthday?” I believe God may show you the two greatest commandments in the Bible, which can serve as the two greatest Christmas gifts for Jesus. “You shall love the Lord your God . . . You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” (The Bible, Matt. 22:37-40, ESV) First, give the gift of love to Jesus. Second, give the gift of love to others.

On Christmas morning, we can show our love for Jesus by dropping to our knees and yielding ourselves anew to Him giving praise for who He is and what He has done. Then throughout Christmas Day, we can show our love for others in three ways: 1) Going and sharing the good news of Christ with someone in a creative way. 2) Going and giving something to a person in need – a meal, toy or clothing. 3) Going and visiting someone in need – a widow, foster child, or someone in the hospital.

Take the challenge. Give Jesus what He wants for His birthday. Then watch your Christmas be filled with a divine and everlasting hope.

The Sinking Dollar and The Steady Cross

The other day I opened up our latest statement on our retirement account and gasped as I looked at the two columns “Current value” versus “Value one year ago”. Ouch! Even though the markets appear to be doing better than earlier in 2009, we still have a long way to go before confidence is restored on Main Street and Wall Street.

The economic road to recovery has a dangerous and growing pothole. Experts are concerned over the declining value of U.S. currency. The dollar is traded daily on the Foreign Exchange Market. Its value is determined by its relation to other currencies on the market like the European euro, the Japanese yen or the Canadian dollar.

Here is the concern – from March to September the dollar has fallen 14.9% against the euro. What is affecting the value of the dollar? There is a mix of technical things, but a major issue is the growing U.S debt, currently at $12 trillion. As investors see the massive and growing debt, it reduces their confidence and they invest elsewhere, like other currencies.

What is the big negative to Main Street? If the dollar keeps sinking, the costs of our foreign goods will start climbing. That is inflation. By the way, what in your home has stamped on it “Made in China, Japan, Mexico” or some other country?

There is so much economic instability right now. We Americans are so used to our government’s wealth, our personal capacity to make and spend or the generosity of others. As a result, when something cleans out the American pocket book, it knocks the legs right out from underneath us.

Is there anything that is sure in this unstable world? Yes. There is only one thing that is a constant and stable source of trust – the person Jesus Christ.

Around 38 A.D. Jesus was tortured then died on a wooden cross. His blood stained that cross. His life and blood was unlike any other. Its value was enough to pay for the debt and penalty of the sin of the world’s population. Through His death, then His resurrection three days later, you and I can be saved from our sin and given a future and hope.

Jesus Christ. He is a sure investment. No matter the conditions of our world, He is a rock that remains. Jesus said, “Let not your hearts be troubled. Believe in God; believe also in me.” (The Bible, John 14:6, ESV) May He be your source of hope for today and all eternity.

Respecting Our Opponents

This summer Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives, Nancy Pelosi, was asked what she thought about the town hall attendees who were voicing their opposition to the health care reform proposals. Her response was, “They are Astroturf.” While watching video of some of the town halls I saw one man standing nearly face to face to his U.S. Senator. He was looking him squarely in the eye, waiving his finger and angrily yelling his message.

The name calling of Pelosi and the disrespectful attitude of the man were both equally wrong and shouldn’t be championed or rationalized. There is no justification based on the person who said it, the position they hold or where it was said. There is also no justification based on the issue or group it’s aimed at. It’s wrong for the left and right, democrats and republicans and for liberals and conservatives.

I know there is admirable intent in the passions we have and causes for which we stand. We want to do what is right, stand up for others and speak out against those who do otherwise. No doubt, the message we have is important. We want it to be heard. However, the reason our message may not be getting through could be that our manner of delivery is offensive.

When Jesus lived on this earth He faced strong opposition to His life changing message. Yet, He successfully communicated it without compromising His godly character. What can we learn from Jesus? First, his own heart was pure and conscious clear before God His Father and others. Second, he was empty of any bitterness or unforgiveness towards his critics. Third, He never tried to exalt Himself by cutting down others. Fourth, He truly loved His opposition. The honest intent of His heart was to see them changed versus destroyed. It is written, “Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.” (The Bible, Romans 12:21, ESV)

Jesus was truthful, firm, humble, forgiving and loving in the midst of a fierce battle over the message He brought. May the example of Jesus Christ give us hope for today as we passionately stand up for what we believe.

God and Socialism

Socialism. I have never heard the word used so much in the news from the presidential campaign to the present. It is being used often in the health care debate by opponents of the President’s plan. Republican National Committee Chairperson, Michael Steele, while taking questions before the National Press Club in July agreed that the president’s healthcare plan was socialistic.

What is socialism? The word was coined by Henri De Saint Simon in the early 1800s. Then in the mid to late 1800s German Philosopher, Karl Marx, co-wrote the Communist Manifesto which laid a philosophical ground work to socialism that evolved into a movement influencing many governments of the world.

There is wide range of definitions, but many experts say socialism is an economic system at its root. According to the writings of many early socialist fathers their system was suppose to combat the inequalities and unfairness that they saw in the industrial revolution. The rich were getting richer and the poor were getting poorer.

On the surface, the principles seem noble. Beneath the surface, the history of socialism has meant government control of private capital (property, wages, and trade) and the administration of production and distribution of goods in a society.

God is the Creator and King over His universe. How does He govern? First, He governs from a position of selflessness. He does not seek to forcibly control for selfish gain. Second, He governs with compassion and personal sacrifice giving of Himself to His creation. Then God teaches those who have received from Him to do the same. Third, He governs by distributing His greatest gift, the forgiveness of sins, equally to all only if they meet His standard. If a person chooses to believe in His Son, Jesus Christ, repent from their sinful behavior and are willing to confess Jesus Christ publicly, then they can receive God’s gift of forgiveness. If they don’t, then they willingly choose suffer the consequences of that decision.

God is the example of how to govern a society. He is a wise King. He governs with justice and compassion and He patiently waits for you. Will you make Him your hope for today?

Worrying About The Future

Huge job losses are a primary symptom of the critical condition of our economy. Nationally, the unemployment rate is approaching 10% at the time. Michigan is nearing 16% and Oregon 13%.

The good news is that no matter how you slice the numbers a majority of Americans are still employed. The numbers show employers are still hiring and people starting up new businesses. In July, businesses in North Carolina hired 4,700 people while Mississippi hired 4,500.

Even though 90% of Americans continue working, some might be worried about job security when they watch the nightly news. The reports on proposed congressional legislation dealing with healthcare and the environment are costly. Some experts warn of a higher federal deficit and more private sector job losses.

How should the majority of Americans live who still have their job, but wonder where things are headed?

1. Be aware. Know what is happening in your industry and company.
2. Be financially prepared. Start saving up emergency funds and paying down your debts.
3. Be the best employee. Do not give the boss a reason to let you go.
4. Be not a worrier.

It is so easy to worry when we feel like we are losing control at events swirling around us. However, worrying is a choice and you do not have to choose it. The God-Man, Jesus Christ, has given us a better way. He once said, “Let not your heart be troubled. Believe in God; believe also in me” (The Bible, John 14:1, ESV).

Jesus is the antidote to a life filled with selfish worry. Yes, worry is selfish. You are usually the primary subject of your worries. Most of the things we worry about never happen anyway. When we turn from self-focused life to a Jesus-focused life, He is able to bring abiding peace in a worry-worn heart. May you find hope for today in the peace of Christ.

The Supreme Examination

Supreme Court nominee Sonia Sotomayor is the first female Hispanic nominee to the court in American history. Her Senate confirmation hearings begin this month. If confirmed she will not only make the history books, but receive a lifetime appointment to the Supreme Court. It is the highest court in the United States and a powerful seat in the U.S. Government.

U.S. Senators are presently combing through thousands of documents going over speeches, court rulings and almost every area of her life trying to determine how she might execute her duties as a Justice. How would she rule on potential cases? How does she interpret the U.S. Constitution? Does she believe the court has the power to make policy?

The position she will potentially hold is influential in literally shaping America's future. On account of that, the process is brutal in making sure our nation places the best person on the bench.

One day I will actually go through something like a senate confirmation hearing. It will be much different though. There will not be any republicans or democrats and it will actually be an honest and fair hearing.

According to the Bible, the most accurate book ever written, there will be a day when every human being will be personally examined by God, the creator of all humanity. Prior to the meeting, God will dissect every area of our life, public and private, from the moment of our birth. His examination will go further then the confirmation hearings. It will also include our thought life and inner motives.

As I anticipate that day, I am not worried. I have confidence and peace. Why? Because God exams without partiality and favoritism. God says, “I will have mercy on whom I have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I have compassion” (The Bible, Romans 9:15, ESV). I have peace today because He has helped me to turn from my sins and brought me total forgiveness through Jesus Christ.

You may not have peace. The thought of being examined by God may leave you with a feeling of uncertainty.

One day we all will be personally examined by God to determine our destination for eternity. Followers of Christ can ponder the implications of that day with a sense of confident hope and abiding peace. May you turn to Him and find your hope for today.

Chrysler Debt and Christ’s Forgiveness

Nearly 800 Chrysler, Jeep, and Dodge dealerships across the country got an unwanted package last month. They received a letter from Chrysler’s corporate office telling them to close up shop. In the end, 25% of the dealership’s network got the bad news. One of those I read about was Frederick George of Flint, Michigan. His family has been in the automobile business since 1928. He said, “Were upset, stunned.” Many others probably echoed his statement across the country.

The executive management miss-steps of Chrysler brought in the federal government and bankruptcy courts. The ripples of this financial mess are far reaching. Local Chrysler dealers are now being pulled under by the company's bad decisions and federal government pressure. After reading a comment from a dealer in Mississippi, I thought his words made a point. The summary of his comments were “Chrysler has their own investments, we have our own and we are not the problem.”

The financial debt that Chrysler accrued over the years is apparently too much for their CEO and board of directors to take care of themselves. All of us have a debt too, of a different kind. It is a sin debt.

A large, heavy debt has been accruing since the moment of our birth. Jesus can take this. He never had a debt of sin of his own, but is willing to take ours. Moreover, when He takes our debt, we will become free from its bondage. There is no greater feeling then being debt free. Jesus said, “You will know the truth, and the truth will set you free” (The Bible, John 8:32, ESV). Let Him take your debt and experience hope for today.

Finding Freedom in the War on Drugs

During President Richard Nixon’s administration, he coined the phrase “War on Drugs.” In the 1980s and 90s Mexican drug cartels began to rise to power becoming stronger than the Mexican military. Now, the war on drugs has reached new levels. Since 2006, over 10,000 people have been killed and the start of 2009 has shown no decline in deaths along the U.S. and Mexico boarder.

How does this drug war relate to you and me? The Justice Department reports that Mexican drug organizations have a sophisticated network of distribution points throughout the United States. Among those are obvious boarder states like Florida, Texas, Arizona, and California. However, they are moving their centers north to places like Wichita, Kansas; Billings, Montana and Milwaukee, Wisconsin. There are 230 cities where the cartels have operations. From urban to rural communities, many are at risk.

What drives the risky business of illegal drugs? The user. What would happen if there were no more users? Like a regular business, if people no longer bought the product, business would shut down. What would have an immediate impact on the drug war? If people no longer used illegal drugs. Sales would stop, street values would plummet, profits would be cut and the lure of making a fortune in drug trafficking would be gone.

What is the leading cause of drug abuse that dealers depend upon? A person’s need for help in coping with physical pain or emotional trauma. All of us experience real and serious challenges every day. For some, their defense or escape mechanism is drugs. However, I believe that most users, when thinking straight, really do want to quit.

If you are hooked, you can be free. A drug dealer is not genuinely concerned about your problems. It is a business and they want their money. However, someone sincerely cares about your welfare – Jesus, God’s Son. He is not primarily interested in your money. He is interested in you, your present and your future. God says, “For I know the plans I have for you . . . plans for wholeness and not for evil to give you a future and a hope” (The Bible, Jeremiah 29:11, ESV). He loves you. He wants to be your Savior and save you from your sin of drug use or even drug dealing. Will you turn from your addiction and find freedom through the complete forgiveness of Jesus? May He be your hope for today.

Who is your HP?

“Tom, do you believe in God?” “Yes and no. I believe there is a God, but I choose to believe in my higher power.” According to different religious surveys, more Americans believe in a higher power then ever before. In 2008, one survey found that 92% of American’s believed in God or a higher power. In another religious survey rolled out last month it found that atheism has doubled in America, and another pollster found that even 21% of atheists are open to belief in a higher power.

Alcoholics Anonymous coined the phrase “higher power” or HP in the 1930s through their 12-step program. The modern consensus of a higher power is something that is greater then yourself, which is some type of god or supernatural force. One website asked people to talk about their higher power. One person said they wanted a higher power that was “on my side and non-judgmental”. Another said, “Mine has a sense of humor and helps me”. One more said, “I sat down and wrote out a list of qualities I wanted in mine.”

Many people find comfort believing in a higher power because it gives them an alternative to how they were raised, brings flexibility to their beliefs and allows them to live how they choose. Yet, their higher power generally does not have a name and there is no reliable source to find a clear description of who their high power is or what it does.

Through my personal experience and study, I believe there is a Being who meets and exceeds what millions are looking for in their higher power. This Being is not just a wandering supernatural force among countless others. He is a person. He has a name. He is above all. And there is a reliable source where people can learn about Him.

This month millions around the world through Easter celebrations are remembering His life. His name is Jesus and you can learn about Him through the Holy Bible. Through reading the books of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John, you will discover Jesus. One writer describes Him as “Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace” (The Bible, Isaiah 9:6, ESV). I believe He is what you and many others are searching for. May Jesus be your hope for today.

A Lesson from Lincoln

On October 4, 2008, former President Bush signed a $700 billion bailout bill and last month, on February 17, President Obama signed a $787 billion stimulus package. The combined pieces of legislation represent $1.487 trillion, the most expensive government actions in the history of our nation and as one commentator said, “Maybe even the history of the world.”

The two bills were responding to a series of crises – the mortgage crisis, the banking crisis, the market crisis and the unemployment crisis. Depending on what party you are from you may see the solution differently. One party sees the answer in government spending more to simulate the economy, while the other feels it is better to cut taxes and allow the citizens to spend more. In the end, both look to money as the savior of our economy.

Former President Abraham Lincoln has been getting much attention recently. We can learn a lesson through observing how Lincoln and Congress responded to their national crisis. During the civil war, when our nation was literally divided and on the brink of collapse, U.S. Senator James Harlan of Iowa introduced a resolution for a time of national prayer. The resolution stated,

“We have been the recipients of the choicest bounties of Heaven. We have been preserved, these many years, in peace and prosperity. We have grown in numbers, wealth and power, as no other nation has ever grown. But we have forgotten God. We have forgotten the gracious hand which preserved us in peace, and multiplied and enriched and strengthened us; and we have vainly imagined, in the deceitfulness of our hearts, that all these blessings were produced by some superior wisdom and virtue of our own. Intoxicated with unbroken success, we have become too self-sufficient to feel the necessity of redeeming and preserving grace, too proud to pray to the God that made us!”

President Lincoln and both chambers of Congress agreed with Senator Harlan. The resolution was approved and signed on March 30, 1863, with an urgent call to a national day of prayer scheduled just 30 days later on April 30.

There are many other times in American history when our nation was facing difficult times. Our national leaders and its citizens formally humbled themselves and called upon God for His help – God responded!

May we realize that the future hope of our nation will not come from the wealth of our own wisdom or prosperity. It comes from God. May we not forget Him in this hour of need. In this fragile world, may He be our hope for today.

The Humanity of a President

Barrack Obama has ascended to the greatest seat of power in the world – the President of the United States of America. The ascension came with the sacred rituals given all presidents wrapped in an atmosphere of splendor with the praise of millions.

The public grandeur of the Presidential Inauguration was awe striking. Then following his oath of office, the private moments of President Obama walking into the Oval Office, assuming his new duties in the world’s most renowned political office, was breath taking.

As we see our new President carry out his role before a watching world, we might forget his humanity. We might think that with the pomp and circumstance of his rise, he is no longer human, but has been transformed into a tireless machine of power and influence.

Beyond the pageantry, President Obama is just like you and me. Throughout his future presidency, there will be public and private moments that display his humanity. Although he is President, he is also a husband, father, and son. In these roles, he will experience times of happiness and sadness, attention and isolation, success and failure.

Across the landscape of history, there was only one great world leader who never had to ascend to power, but always had it and still governs today. He is history’s only leader who was fully human and fully God. In His humanity, He grieved the death of a friend, was misunderstood by the public and betrayed by His friends. In His deity, He forgave sins, raised the dead and healed the sick. Who is this? Jesus. He is the Great King. He is the King of all Kings and President of all Presidents.

There is one person who is above all world leaders - Jesus. There is one person that can be looked to for wisdom and understanding by us all, including President Barrack Obama - Jesus. Jesus said about Himself, “Do not let your hearts be troubled. Trust in God; trust also in me” (The Bible, John 14:1).

May we exalt Jesus above all and put our trust in Him alone, the Great King. May He be our hope for today.

A New Start

As a sunrise means the start of a new day, so January means the start of a new year. Our world is filled with examples of new starts. The toss of a coin on a football field is the start of a new game, a wedding is the start of a new marriage and the birth of a child is the start of a new life. Examples are all around us in every sphere of life. They can teach us a few things.

First, a new start teaches us about perseverance. Life can make you weary. It can make you feel like giving up telling yourself, “I can’t do this anymore.” However, January can be a new start. Will you give up or accept that last year is gone and renew your commitment to give your best and keep pressing onward?

Second, a new start teaches us about opportunity. January shouts saying, “Hey, it is a new year. What are you going to do with it?” You may have an opportunity to begin a new career, help someone who is in need, or fulfill a lifelong dream. Will they come and pass you by or will you seize them?

Third, a new start teaches us about the grace of God. As a New Year’s Day is the chance to begin a new and better year, so the grace of God is a chance for you to begin a new and transformed life.

Like you have done nothing to bring about a sunrise or a new year, so you have done nothing to bring about the grace of God. What is this amazing grace? It is a form of God’s love shown to us through the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ that provided for the forgiveness of sins of all humankind.

As January is a start to a new year, Jesus Christ can be the start of a new life for you. Through Him, you can become a new person. Receive His grace by turning from your sin and receive your hope for today and all of 2009.

A Lasting Hope

Where is the hope? Between the financial crisis and multiple natural disasters, the majority of American's have been affected. Then throw in our transition to a new President, the wars in Iraq, Afghanistan and disturbing events in our communities and families it is understandable why some would wonder.

I define hope as something you need when you are in a situation beyond your control. Your determination, education, passing of time, money and position do not solve your problem. You feel that if there is going to be a solution, it must come from outside yourself.

Christmas is the annual worldwide celebration of the birth of Jesus. From the time of His birth in the first century to the people of today, His birth continues to inspire hope.

His birth was marked with many supernatural events. On one occasion, a heavenly angel spoke to His earthly father, Joseph, about his soon to be wife, Mary, saying, “She will bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins.” (Matt. 1:21)

That divine mission was the hope of all humanity. It was to provide a way for people to be saved from their sin. Why is that hope? Because sin is at the root of hopelessness. The curse of sin, the sin of others and our own sin. Physical death, sickness and disease are all part of this curse. Divorce, drunkenness, lying, greed and sexual immorality may be sins that you or people in your circle of family or friends have been guilty of. It has affected all of us bringing chaos or complete destruction to our lives or to those whom we love.

Jesus birth, His eventual death and resurrection have made a way that we can have real hope. Whether the trials we go through are of our own making or from the hands of others, we do not have to carry the burden anymore. When we turn from trying to save ourselves and in faith call upon Jesus, we discover the lasting hope of Christmas. May you receive His hope this Christmas season.

The Cost of Service

In 1977, Congress passed the Community Reinvestment Act. The legislation helped minorities, low-income families and inner city residents obtain home-ownership through low-income loans. By the year 2000, banks had given out nearly one trillion dollars in loans because of the Act, which had undergone some changes.

Minorities, low-income families and inner city residents all seem to have a target on their back that only some people can see. I firmly believe among elected officials, community organizations and businesses there are some who are genuine and truly seek to serve the needs of others, but there are also some who seek to simply profit at the expense of others.

The current mortgage crisis is an example. The very people who were suppose to benefit from these “easy to get” loans are now its greatest victims. This leads me to wonder, “Are minorities and low-income families just a business opportunity to make money? Are they just a program idea to receive money from the government? Are they more than just pawns in a game of power between political parties?”

I know of a famous and powerful person in world history who spent his life serving the minorities and low-income people of His day – Jesus Christ. In His short three-year ministry career, He quickly became one of the most famous men of his day. Long before cars, marketing and sound systems people traveled miles on foot to hear him speak. Crowds would gather by the thousands in the open air to listen. Yet, He was never lured away into using His fame, power or influence to serve His own personal ambitions. Rather, He continually gave of Himself to minister to the sick, feed the hungry and offer words of hope to all who came and listened. He gave Himself so fully, that it eventually cost Him His life. Jesus once said, “For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world and lose his own soul?” (The Bible, Mark 8:36).

May Jesus be our hope for today and our model for service. May we not seek to serve ourselves at the expenses of others, but rather serve others at the expense of ourselves.

Breaking Down The Walls

Long before Vice-Presidential nominee Governor Sarah Palin was elected Mayor of Wasilla, Alaska, there was Susanna Madora Salter. In 1887, Salter threw open the door for women to hold political office. She became the nation’s first woman Mayor in Argonia, Kansas. The results of the election traveled quickly across the county and even around the world.

The door that Presidential nominee U. S. Senator Barack Obama has walked through was opened by Alexander Lucius Twilight. He became America’s first black elected to political office. In 1836, Twilight became a member of the Vermont House of Representatives.

The humble beginnings of women and blacks in politics have now risen to their greatest heights, with a chance to hold the most powerful political office in the world. When you go to the polls and vote on November 4, you will be part of a milestone in America’s political history. You will help put either our first black as President or our first woman as Vice-President of the United States.

This historic presidential race shows how far we have come in granting equal rights and opportunities to women and blacks. Though we have come far, we still have much to go. Racism and sexism still exists in this country. Far too long, we have judged people’s worth by their gender and race. Fortunately, God does not judge others the same way. We look at the outside, He looks at the heart.

We see how God values people by looking at His Son, Jesus Christ. During His time on earth, history records how Jesus reached out to women and people of different races upsetting the political climate of His day. Due to His teachings and refusal to stop, He was sentenced to a tortuous death. Yet, even death could not stop Him. For three days, He lay in a tomb, then a miraculous resurrection happened and Jesus rose from the dead. When He did, a great wall of separation came crashing down. The wall that separates mankind from God was demolished and the wall that divides people from each other was destroyed. Through Jesus Christ, we find our answer for the barriers that separate us. He is our hope for today. He is our hope for America.

Two Paths, One Choice

At 16 years old, Justin was a hard worker, loved to help others and had a love for politics. That is why a candidate for Governor took a risk and asked him to be a County Chairman for his statewide political race. He wound up doing a tremendous job. He helped the candidate win the county with the highest voter turn out in the state.

Tommy, also 16 years old, led a much different life then Justin. During one weekend, Tommy played a role in slashing 34 tires. He became caught up in a bizarre tire slashing competition with other teenagers. People began filing complaints with the police, who launched an investigation. Soon Tommy’s mother found out and with her direction, he voluntarily surrendered himself to police and was arrested.

As the fall semester begins for schools across America, the classrooms will be filled with Justins and Tommys. These two young men represent two paths in life that bring very different results. One path results in a generous and sacrificial spirit that puts a concern for others above themselves. The other path results in a narcissistic spirit that loves self first and only sacrifices for others if it will provide a personal benefit.

God’s Son, Jesus, spoke of these two paths. He said there is a path that leads to eternal life, but it is narrow, hard to follow and has few people on it. He said there is another path, but it leads to eternal destruction, is wide, easy to follow and has many people on it.

Why does the one path have few people on it? Because there must be a deliberate choice to put a love for others and a love for God above self. As a result, people discover the present and eternal life God offers. Why does the wide path have many people on it? Because it is the easy choice. It is the default path. It leads to a destructive life for people because they want to direct their own life, trust in themselves and put their needs above God and others.

Each path represents a choice. God says to us, “Choose you this day whom you will serve” (The Bible, Joshua 24:15). It is never too late, what path will you choose? May Jesus be your hope for today.
